"I've known Dr. Lustria for four years now, and I can say without equivocation that I don't know anyone who tirelessly lives the ideals of this award like she does. I met Dr. Lustria in the 2005 as I entered the FSU College of Information's Information Technology program. One of the unexpected aspects of the IT program was the focus on service, and more specifically, service learning. Service learning in the FSU College of Information is where students are paired with (typically non-profit) organizations that are partnered in order to provide technology services. While many of us were quite skeptical of its importance, I was blown away at the tangible and long-lasting impact of our contributions. In Dr. Lustria's classes, I was personally involved with the redesign of two non-profit organizations' websites - Leon County Solid Waste and Capital City Youth Services. I never would have understood the importance of technology to the non-profit sector were it not for Dr. Lustria making this a cornerstone of her classes. Dr. Lustria's service to FSU, her profession, and her community are apparent when spending any length of time around her, and I'm thrilled that she is being recognized for her tireless commitment to the ideals that she preaches with her actions." "I have known Dr. Lustria since 2006, when I enrolled in her LIS 3267 Information Science course. this course was different from other courses and seemed to mix a great deal of hands-on and real-world experience with the theoretical aspects of information technology. I remember thinking I was completely out of my league when she assigned the major project, and briefly considered changing majors. We were to build or re-build a website for a local non-profit organization. I'd never built a website or coded anything, but was reassured by Dr. Lustria that I would be fine. By the end of the semester I had gained enough experience as an IT professional to reinstate my confidence and my choice to remain in the major. Not only did I learn some basics of website design and structure but I was also introduced to the concept of working with a client and dealing with group dynamics. I had also contributed to the community by providing a non-profit organization with an updated website, which gave me a sense of pride." Read more here

"Dr. Lustria had a major impact on my development as a student. Having been a C student in high school, I recently reflected upon my college career in an attempt to identify the person or event that caused my drastic turnaround to an A student in college. It didn't take long for me to identify Dr. Lustria as that individual who reshaped my perspective on academia and its purpose. She is one of the most driven and caring individuals I have ever met and her personal goal of excellence in everything she does is reflected in her teaching, community outreach and student mentoring." "I am constantly impressed by the amount of work Dr. Lustria does in a single day. Between her scholarship, teaching load, and personal life, she rarely has a moment to spare. Even so, she remains extremely accessible and open to any questions or concerns I have. Whereas other professors and supervisors may assign individual, isolated tasks, Dr. Lustria allows me to understand her projects on a big-picture level. I truly feel as though I am a part of the project, not just an employee. She is open to collaborating with all members of her team, and that I feel that this atmosphere is responsible for our successes. From the work we do together to advice about succeeding in a graduate-level environment and beyond, I feel comfortable asking her about anything, and she remains a valuable and trusted resource for me. I have come to view Dr. Lustria as a mentor on a professional, but also on a personal level. Her dedication and her intelligence is obvious from her long list of scholarship and research, but I have also found her to be warm, kind, and eager to help her students, colleagues, and community. As a woman in academia, she demonstrates that it is possible to have a full and vibrant life, balancing career, family, and service." Read more here.

"Prof. Lustria encouraged me to be a proud woman and an Information Technology professional. This is an interesting combination because the field is dominated by men. Professor Lustria showed me that being a Hispanic and a woman can become a strength instead of making me feel like an outsider. She also taught me that I should never forget to contribute to the community. She did this by having us do projects that included community service. To this day, I participate in volunteer work regularly. Prof. Lustria has impacted my life in a positive way. She helped me become the professional and the volunteer that I am today. She helped me to be successful and showed me to try to do the same for others." Read more here
